Born in El Paso, Texas, in 1921, Gene Roddenberry spent most of his childhood in Los Angeles, where he began his career. With a strong interest in science and aeronautics, he eventually served as a Second Lieutenant in World War II. While serving in the U.S. Army Air Corps, Mr. Roddenberry flew B-17 bombers in the South Pacific and earned the Distinguished Flying Cross and Air Medal. During this time, he also began writing, selling his first stories and poems to a number of magazines and other publications.

After the war, Mr. Roddenberry began working as a commercial pilot and enjoyed a successful career in that field until deciding to leave for Hollywood when he first saw television. After a number of years of flying and serving in the Los Angeles Police Department, Gene Roddenberry sold his first successful project, Star Trek. Star Trek quickly earned a loyal fan base and became one of the most successful television series in history. One episode has even been preserved in the Smithsonian, which also contains a model of the famous U.S.S. Enterprise. In response to the success of the show and popular demand, NASA even named the first space shuttle Enterprise in honor of Star Trek.

Gene Roddenberry’s iconic work has outlived him, maintaining its popularity for many years following his death in 1991. Today, millions of science fiction fans still claim Star Trek as among their favorite shows.

Jeremy Geffen Discusses the Role of Personal Managers and Talent Agents

Jeremy Geffen serves as President of his own consulting company, Geffen Management Group. In this role, Jeremy Geffen draws on his experience in the fields of entertainment and talent management. Mr. Geffen began his career with the William Morris Agency, Inc. Starting in the mailroom, he eventually earned a promotion to the television department before joining The Endeavor Agency, LLC. He later served as General Manager at Creative Management Group. Jeremy Geffen outlines the basic roles and responsibilities of personal managers and talent agents.

Artists and other entertainment professionals often require a team of people to help them keep their careers on track, including an entertainment lawyer, personal manager, and a talent agent. The roles of managers and agents often overlap and can be difficult to define, but most artists employ both on a commission basis.

A personal manager handles a wide range of duties that include obtaining gear, selecting material, and resolving disputes within a band or group. The manager whom an artist selects depends largely on his or her budget and needs. The individual can vary from an old friend who has grown with the group or artist from the beginning to a large, professional management agency.

At each stage in an artist’s career, the individual may need varied assistance from a manager, depending on his or her business acumen, interests, and professional success. While some entertainers require a great deal of personal assistance and support, others mainly seek business advice and recommendations from a personal manager. Some managers may handle the duties of a talent agent, like booking gigs and planning tours. However, more experienced artists hire separate professionals to serve as personal managers and talent agents. Legal questions that pertain to negotiating the details of contracts should not be the responsibility of a manager or agent. The specialized issues are best dealt with by someone with legal experience.

The Importance of Exercise

by Jeremy Geffen

My name is Jeremy Geffen. I am the President of a management company for musicians and other talent. In addition to running my company, I also act as a consultant to Gene Roddenberry productions and am working on two unscripted television series and three scripted series. Yet I still make time to include an exercise regimen in my daily life.

Exercise is important in many ways. Naturally, many people immediately think about the physical benefits, of which there are many. Exercise helps you manage your weight and also fights health diseases and conditions. Individuals who stay active can lower cholesterol levels. People who are active are at a lower risk for strokes, type 2 diabetes, and some types of cancer and arthritis. Regular exercise increases stamina, which helps maintain energy through the day. The body learns to become more efficient with its energy supplies as it gets accustomed to regular aerobic activity. Finally, regular exercise also tones your muscles, giving you a healthier, more attractive appearance.

However, exercise is also beneficial for your career. People who exercise sleep better overall. Additionally, exercise is a great stress reliever. While people are concentrating on their exercise, they forget to think about stressors. And though it may sound contradictory, people who exercise have more energy than people who don’t. When they are done exercising, they enjoy the feel-good effect of released endorphins. Physical activity can improve mental clarity and focus, enabling people to perform at their very best during the work day. Finally, and perhaps most importantly, exercise improves an individual’s overall mood as it stimulates certain brain chemicals. Exercise is one of the best treatments for depression.

I urge you to begin an exercise regimen today and join me in reaping many of its benefits.

Jeremy Geffen Discusses Royalties and Recording Contracts

A seasoned music and entertainment industry professional with more than a decade of experience, Jeremy Geffen has worked with some of the most prominent names in talent representation, management, and consulting. He has helped to guide the careers of many major artists, including D12, Three 6 Mafia, and Sisqo. Currently, Jeremy Geffen serves as President of his own consulting company, Geffen Management Group. Here, Mr. Geffen discusses how royalties work in a basic recording contract.

Like any contract, a recording contract is enforceable by law. When artists consider signing one, they should always try to obtain the advice of an experienced professional with their interests at heart. They may include an agent, manager, or entertainment lawyer. The professionals can look at the specifics of any contract and help explain what they may mean for an artist’s particular situation. For many artists, the chief goal in signing a contract is the opportunity to get paid for making music. Generally, this process works through royalties. A record company handles the recording, mastering, production, and sales.

The firm also pays the artist a percentage of each album sold, which is known as royalties. While artists may obtain income from other sources, like ticket sales on a tour or merchandise, the main source of revenue in a recording contract is royalties. A recording contract will stipulate that a percentage be paid in royalties, usually ranging from between 10 and 20 percent. The more established that an artist is, the higher the percentage he or she may receive.

The amount of revenue an artist makes depends both on the percentage of royalties and on how well the record sells. It is important to note that most contracts pay royalties on the wholesale price of the album rather than the retail price. Since the wholesale price is substantially lower, this may seriously impact the projected earnings from royalties.

Jeremy Geffen on Project Angel Food

Los Angeles resident Jeremy Geffen is an entertainment executive and has worked with well-known musical acts including Sisqo and Three 6 Mafia. In addition to his career, Jeremy Geffen enjoys giving back to the community. He contributes time to the nonprofit, Project Angel Food in California.

Project Angel Food strives to nourish individuals who are affected by life-threatening illnesses such as AIDS and cancer. To this end, the volunteers at the nonprofit cook and deliver food to those in need throughout Los Angeles County. The meals are nutritious and fresh, cooked by professional chefs and volunteers. In addition to assisting the chefs, the volunteers play an important role in addition to delivering food. When they deliver food, they are also providing compassion and an escape from the isolation that is experienced by many individuals who suffer from terminal illnesses. In the previous year, Project Angel Food delivered more than 700,000 meals to 2,200 people.

The nonprofit was founded in 1989 by Marianne Williamson as a branch of the Los Angeles Center for Living. At the time, the Project prepared 15 meals daily. Since then, the number of meals prepared has grown tremendously and the program’s outreach has expanded. Not only does the Project provide meals, but they also give each client presents on birthdays and during the holidays. Volunteers also provide clients with nutrition counseling in order to educate them about maintaining or improving their health.

Project Angel Food relies on its volunteer workforce to achieve its goals. Volunteers can help in the kitchen, in the office, with outreach, or at special events. To learn more about volunteering, visit www.angelfood.org.
